A solid kit list covers three jobs: warmth, protection and visibility. That means a beanie, neck warmer or balaclava for cold exposure, technical gloves for grip and warmth, and goggles that fit properly under a helmet without fogging. Add a pack or bag suited to transporting bulky kit, and you've covered the core winter sports accessories most trips demand, whatever the mountain throws at you.

Mountain weather shifts fast, so accessories need to layer as easily as clothing does. Start with a thin base layer piece like a neck gaiter that can go up or down, add an insulating layer such as a beanie or fleece-lined hat, and keep a windproof accessory in reserve for exposed ridges or lift queues. The aim is quick adjustment without stopping to dig through a bag.

Layering for skiing works the same way as layering for any cold-weather pursuit: a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid layer for warmth, and a weatherproof outer shell for wind and snow. Snow sports accessories complete the system, with gloves, headwear and neck protection covering the areas clothing can't. Add or remove layers as effort and weather change, rather than just dressing for the coldest moment of the day.

Regular thermals trap warmth but do little else. Technical base layers like our Mountain Pro range wick sweat away from the skin, regulate temperature during high-output sections like climbs or moguls, and dry quickly when conditions turn wet. On the mountain, that difference matters: a damp base layer chills fast once you stop moving, while a technical one keeps you dry and warm through a full day on snow.

It depends on exposure and helmet fit. A beanie suits lift queues and après-ski, where warmth without bulk matters most. A neck warmer covers the gap between jacket and helmet, useful in wind and driving snow. A balaclava gives full face protection for the coldest, most exposed days on the mountain. Many skiers carry more than one and switch depending on conditions, rather than relying on a single piece. You might also consider a thin merino liner, like out Stealth Skull Beanie that can be worn under a helmet.
