Outdoor Accessories

Aside from the correct layering system for hiking, essential accessories include:

• A water bottle; choose something that is light when empty such as a Tritan Water Bottle or a Stainless Steel Water Bottle to keep drinks cold. No matter the distance of your hike, proper hydration is vital.
• An appropriate hat; opt for a Merino Wool Beanie to keep your head warm in cold temperatures or a Cap or Boonie Hat for sun protection on hot days.
• Consider a warm pair of gloves if the temperature is in the low single figures or below freezing.
• Comfortable socks, the starting point for any hike and something we learned the hard way in the military. Comfortable socks such as Merino Wool Hiking socks are just as important for morale as they are for performance.
• First Aid Kit, accidents happen, even on a day hike. Manage risks accordingly with a Minor First Aid Kit for day trips and a more Advanced First Aid Kit for multi day expeditions.

For a day hike, focus on the accessories that manage risk and minimise bulk. A small pack for water, food and a spare layer, gloves or a hat for changing conditions, and a reliable way to navigate if the weather turns. Keep the load light. Every accessory should have a clear job, whether that's warmth, weather protection or carrying capacity, reduce weight by only packing what you are likely to need.

From training in remote, wet locations from the Welsh mountains to the Jungle, we’ve seen first hand the importance of packing the right water resistant accessories. Waterproof gloves, a pack cover and weather-resistant dry bags for essentials like maps or a phone all reduce the risk of a soaked, uncomfortable hike turning into a safety risk. Look for durable construction and sealed seams to protect your valuables.

Blisters are caused by fit and friction, not a lack of fitness - trust us, we’ve seen some grim examples from our military training days. For starters, make sure your hiking boots are the right size for your feet. Next a good pair of socks, look for a moisture wicking material like merino wool and a seamless design if possible. In cold temperatures, you might think wearing two pairs of thick socks is a smart idea, do not make this mistake. Two pairs of socks can increase friction and the likelihood of blisters.

The best place to start is with a comfortable pair of merino wool socks, a small item to pack but a big win for morale. You will notice the difference instantly. A good quality water bottle is non-negotiable in stainless steel or a BPA-free tritan bottle. Wherever you’re going, whatever you’re doing, you will need water. Another item that will make all the difference is a comfortable hiking backpack, such as the Pinnacle 28L, with a hip belt for additional support and enough storage capacity for a short day hike.

The key consideration when choosing accessories for a multi day hike is weight and packability. If you are camping overnight, opt for a lightweight, packable sleeping system i.e. tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag. Ensure you have a large enough water bottle, or multiple water bottles to manage a safe duration without fresh supplies. A tip for the top, owing to the natural antimicrobial properties of merino wool, socks made from this can be worn for multiple days in a row, minimising the number of socks you need to pack.
