Women's Outdoor Jackets

An anorak earns its place in wind-exposed, wet or variable conditions, where its closed-front construction genuinely outperforms a full-zip jacket: hiking in driving rain, exposed ridgelines, or any activity where wind chill is a bigger risk than sustained sub-zero cold. It also suits high-output activity well, since the looser cut typically allows a base or mid-layer underneath without restricting movement. It's less suited to situations demanding fast venting or quick removal, since the pullover design and single closure point make it slower to take on and off than a full-zip alternative.

Layer beneath it the same way you would under any weatherproof shell: a moisture-wicking base layer to manage sweat, and an insulating mid-layer, fleece or synthetic fill, if the conditions demand extra warmth. The anorak's looser cut is built to accommodate this layering without restricting movement, so match what's underneath to the actual temperature and activity level rather than defaulting to maximum insulation regardless of exertion.

Both are pullover-style, hooded outer layers without a full front zip, but they differ in weight and purpose. An anorak is typically a heavier, more structured garment, often insulated, built for sustained cold-weather wear. A cagoule is lighter and more packable, designed primarily as waterproof, windproof protection to throw on quickly over other layers rather than to provide warmth itself. In practice: reach for an anorak when the priority is warmth and wind resistance together; reach for a cagoule when the priority is fast, packable rain protection over a system that's already handling insulation.

It depends on the build. An insulated anorak with a windproof, weatherproof outer shell performs well in cold, wind-exposed winter conditions, since its closed-front, pullover construction blocks draughts more effectively than a full-zip jacket. For genuine extreme cold, insulation fill and rating matter more than the anorak style alone; a lightweight, uninsulated anorak won't hold up the same way an expedition-grade insulated jacket would. Match the specific build to the conditions, not the silhouette alone.

Room to layer, not room to spare. There should be enough space to wear a fleece or mid-layer underneath without the jacket pulling across the shoulders or restricting arm movement, but excess fabric can allow heat to escape as well as flap uncomfortably in high winds. Articulated sleeves that don't ride up when you raise your arms, an adjustable hem to seal out draughts, and a stiffened hood that stays taut in the wind.

Below freezing, prioritise fill power and coverage. Goose down offers the best warmth-to-weight ratio for dry cold; PrimaLoft® Gold Active is the synthetic equivalent and keeps performing if it gets damp, which down does not. Look for a high collar, an adjustable hood that seals around the face, and cuffs and hem that close properly. A jacket that lets in draughts at the wrists or neck will undermine all the hard work done by its insulated fill.

For a cold UK winter, look for an insulated jacket combining a high-loft fill, either goose down or PrimaLoft® Gold Active, with a wind resistant face fabric like Pertex®. The insulation traps warm air close to the body; the face fabric stops that warmth being stripped away by wind chill, which does more damage on a British winter walk than the temperature reading alone. A jacket that pairs generous insulation with a wind resistant face fabric will often outperform heavier, less purpose built coats.

Start with the activity. A high-output pursuit like fell running needs breathability and freedom of movement over outright warmth. A static one, like winter photography or dog walking, needs insulation first. Check the fit allows a mid-layer underneath without restricting the arms or shoulders, and look at the details: adjustable hem and cuffs, a hood that moves with your head rather than against it, taped seams if it claims to be waterproof. ThruDark's women's outdoor jackets are built to this brief: named fabric, defined use case, no vague "all-weather" claims.
