A close-fitting, technical performance t-shirt built from a moisture-wicking synthetic or cotton/synthetic blend outperforms a standard cotton tee for anything involving real exertion. It moves sweat away from the skin instead of holding it there, stays lighter through a session, and won't cling uncomfortably by the second set. For lifting or steady-state cardio, either works; for high-intensity or long-duration training, the difference becomes obvious fast.

A synthetic wicking fabric such as DriRelease®, which pulls sweat away from the skin and releases it as vapour up to four times faster than cotton, is built specifically for high-output training. Merino wool is the alternative for those who prioritise temperature regulation and odour resistance over outright speed of drying, and it stays comfortable across a wider range of intensities. Both outperform cotton for anything beyond a light warm-up.

Not for serious training. Cotton absorbs sweat rather than moving it away from the skin, so it gets heavier and stays wet through a session, which is uncomfortable and can leave you chilled once you stop moving. It also dries slowly afterwards. For a light stretch session or a casual walk to the gym it's fine; for a session that gets you sweating, a technical wicking fabric does the job cotton simply isn't built for.

Close enough to move with the body, not so tight it restricts the shoulders or chest during a lift. A compression or fitted cut suits high-mobility training and lets you see form during lifts; a slightly looser athletic cut suits general training and allows more airflow. Either way, excess fabric bunching under a rucksack strap or a barbell is a sign the fit is wrong.

Wash on a cold cycle without fabric softener, which coats technical fibres and blocks the moisture-wicking properties that make the fabric work in the first place. Turn the shirt inside out to protect any printed graphics and reduce pilling, and air dry where possible rather than using high heat, which can degrade synthetic fibres and antimicrobial treatments.

You can, but it's a compromise. A standard cotton tee will hold sweat rather than move it away from the skin, get heavier as a session goes on, and take longer to dry afterwards. For a light session it won't hold you back much; for anything sustained or high-intensity, a technical wicking fabric will keep you noticeably more comfortable and dry throughout.
