OP FAN DANCE

The Fan Dance is a gruelling 24km test march staged over Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons, Wales, at 886m (2,907ft). It stands as the world's oldest Special Forces selection test and remains one of the first major indicators of whether a candidate has the physical and mental capacity to progress through UK Special Forces Selection. Weighted with a loaded pack, timed against the clock, and repeated over the same brutal terrain, it separates genuine capability from good intentions in a single day.

Yes. The Fan Dance remains an established part of UK Special Forces (SAS/SBS) Selection, alongside Pathfinder Selection, run over Pen y Fan as it has been for decades. It has earned its place as the enduring benchmark test of Selection, not a historic exercise that's fallen out of use.

The name comes directly from Pen y Fan, the mountain the march is staged over. Dance refers to the route itself, an immediate ascent up and over the peak, then back down and over again on the return leg, a punishing there-and-back march rather than a single climb. The name is functional, not decorative: it describes exactly what candidates are put through.

Extremely. Candidates cover 24km of exposed, unforgiving Brecon Beacons terrain, carrying a loaded pack, against a strict time limit, with an immediate and repeated ascent of Pen y Fan built into the route. It tests sustained physical endurance under load as much as raw fitness, and the weather on Pen y Fan, often driving wind, rain or snow regardless of season, adds a second layer of difficulty most candidates underestimate until they're on the mountain. It is designed as a genuine filter, not a formality.

The Fan Dance is a notorious component of Special Forces Selection and one we are well versed in from our time in UK Special Forces. We found that in changeable, often harsh Welsh mountain weather, the key is a balanced layering system. A moisture-wicking base layer to manage sweat under load, and a windproof, weather-resistant outer layer to hold up against Pen y Fan's exposed conditions. Footwear needs to handle both pace and technical, at times wet terrain without compromise. Given the pack weight and distance, every piece of kit should be tested and trusted beforehand, since failure at any point on the mountain isn't a minor inconvenience, it's the test itself.
